Jesus on the way to Calvary. Altar bench compartment
Jesus on the way to Calvary. Altar bench compartment
Certainly the painting does not have the same numerical or chronological representation as the sculpture in this museum, but among those acquired by Marès there are some of extraordinary quality and importance.
This table was part of the Major Altarpiece of the church of the convent of Sant Agustí Vell in Barcelona. The pictorial cycle was commissioned in 1463 by the Confraría dels blanquers to Jaume Huguet, one of the most representative artists of Catalan Gothic painting. The altarpiece of Sant Agustí, patron saint of seasonings, is considered the most important pictorial commission of the second half of the 15th century in Catalonia.
The work in question must have been part of the predella of the altarpiece. Jesus is helped by Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross in the presence of the Virgin and Saint John. On the right, we see the saions, which are distinguished by their rich clothing. The glances between Jesus and his mother express a deep and contained pain that is also reflected in the clasped and pleading hands of Saint John.
Critics consider that this table was mostly painted by Huguet and that his workshop was hardly involved. Stylistically it is a magnificent work of maturity.
Following the bombardment that Barcelona suffered in 1714 by the troops of Felipe V, the church of Sant Agustí was partially destroyed and the altarpiece, which was dismantled, was scattered. At present, only this piece and six other tables from the central body plus another from the predella with the representation of the Last Supper are preserved, all of them kept in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia.
