Pictures to be believed. Catholics and Protestants in Europe and Barcelona, 16th-18th centuries
In a Europe shaken by wars of religion and rivalries of a confessional nature, Catholics and Protestants became two religious cultures that seemed practically irreconcilable, and the emergence of the printing press facilitated the rapid spread of both Protestant theses and those of the Catholic reaction. Barcelona echoed the religious and artistic changes of the moment, and adapted to the initiatives that other cities started. Thus, the city was also indebted to the prevailing graphic culture; foreign prints transmitted the doctrine, while also inspiring local painters and sculptors.
