Throughout history and in different cultures, clothing has been accompanied by a series of accessories that have helped designate belonging to a certain social class. In the modern Western world, buckles were exclusive to the wealthier classes, as were luxurious watches with chatelaine that hung from the rich dresses, or the keys of capricious shapes that allowed them to be strung, of agate, carnelian or gilded silver. So were the buttons that fastened jackets or vests, which apart from the practical component had a clear decorative role.
The canes also tell us about rich and varied materials - ebony, cane, vori, bone and silver - and figurative elements, with portraits and animal heads, such as dogs and horses, and suns and moons. Other objects were kept in the dresses, but when they were displayed they were in tune with the prevailing fashion: wallets, card holders, coin purses and snuff boxes.
The lenses, the impertinent ones - which had a handle -, monocles and theater binoculars, many of them coming from Paris, like many of the fashions that spread throughout Europe during the 19th century, were among the objects linked to leisure.
