Numerous sanctuaries and centers of religious worship have transcended the devout interest of the faithful from the immediate surroundings to become places of pilgrimage for a wide territorial scope.

Founded in 1025 by the abbot Oliba, Montserrat was one of the many monasteries that were built in Catalonia in medieval times, but it gradually acquired a prominent relevance, until it became, in the latter part of the 19th century, following the cultural movement of the Renaissance, the center of the Catholic faith in the country, and its titular was declared the patron saint of Catalonia.
