Mother of God with the Child
Mother of God with the Child
From the Romanesque model of the seated, majestic and aloof Virgin that we found in the first rooms of the museum, in the Gothic period Mary is represented as a woman and as a mother.
This piece of excellent quality shows the Virgin leaning slightly to her right side due to the weight of her child. He, sitting on the mother's forearm, has a small bird in his hands. The representation of the Virgin and Child in the Gothic is more natural and tender and completely departs from that of the Romanesque, in which the Virgin remains rigid and static, merely as a throne for the child. Here we see the loving relationship between the two, who are smiling.
This sculpture is attributed to the Barcelona sculptor and goldsmith Pere Moragues, one of the most excellent Gothic artists in the territories of the Crown of Aragon. It is a piece made during the early period of his professional career, between 1355 and 1360. It comes from Cervera, where it was in the church of the convent of Sant Francesc de Paula
The stone in which it was sculpted deserves special attention: alabaster. This material, ductile and easy to work with, was the favorite of Catalan sculptors of the 14th and 15th centuries, who knew how to take advantage of its chromatic possibilities.
The restoration of the sculpture has revealed the loss of the original crown, which was replaced at a later time by another metal one, which is also not preserved.
Frederic Marès bought this work from the Barcelona collector Soler i March together with the tomb made by the workshop of Ferrán González that we were able to see in room 12.
