On the occasion of the Casals Year commemoration on the 50th anniversary of his death, we have gathered a set of documents from the Museum that show the relationship between Pau Casals and Frederic Marès.
Frederic Marès' link with Puerto Rico began at the end of 1964 when the Instituto de Cultura Puertoriqueño commissioned the sculptor to create a monument in memory of Segundo Ruiz Belvis (1829–1867), political leader and abolitionist activist, which was inaugurated on November 19, 1967 in Hormigueros. In the early 1970s, he received a new commission to erect a monument dedicated to José Salvador Brau (1842-1912), writer and local historian, inaugurated on January 12, 1975 in Cabo Rojo (Puerto Rico).
In March 1969 Frederic Marès traveled to Puerto Rico invited by the Puerto Rican Cultural Institute to give a conference on José de Diego, Puerto Rican journalist and politician and visited Pau Casals. Some photographs and the travel notes of Frederic Marès bear witness to the meeting between the two artists.
