The political object and collecting
The Frederic Marès Museum proposes, under the title ' The political object and collecting. The Liberal Revolution (1808-1843)’, an itinerary for the permanent exhibition through 16 featured objects in some of the rooms of the Collector's cabinet . This selection explains the politicization of the objects of everyday life during the first half of the 19th century in Catalonia, immersed in the struggle between the liberal revolutionary culture and the Carlist reaction.
The itinerary, curated by Jordi Roca, professor of history at the University of Barcelona, is organized in four thematic areas s that allow us to describe, analyze and interpret this historical period: The transnational liberal culture, liberalism in the Spanish monarchy, the civil wars and Baldomero Espartero (1793-1879).
Likewise, the route shows four types of objects well defined: Objects associated with forms of consumption of the elites of the late 18th century (snuff caps), the politicization of weapons and the secularization of religious practices such as relics (lock of hair); Male objects and accessories linked to the consumption of tobacco (pipes, cigarette holders, rolling papers) and alcohol (elixir), and to the practice of gambling (cards); New forms of mass reproduction of images (engravings, lithographs and photographs) that can be combined with other objects, such as accessories (fans); and forms of ecclesiastical pedagogy that were secularized to construct narratives of the lives of romantic heroes or national histories (auques).
These objects helped turn politics into a new consumer product and have been coveted by collectors such as Frederic Marès.
On the other hand, they are exposed to the Showcase of the Museum Courtyard six complementary pieces related to the itinerary.
