During the last years, the group of the analytical chemistry section of the University of Barcelona in collaboration with Dr. Lourdes de Sanjosé, specialist in medieval goldsmithing, has focused part of her research on the glazes from Limoges , which was the most important center of production of enamelled objects during the Middle Ages .
Using optical microscopy and X-Ray Fluorescence techniques, a morphological and compositional study of the materials of these enamels from Limoges. This provides information on the creative processes followed for its realization. The materials used, as well as certain formal characteristics, indicate when the work was created , what were the creative decisions of the artists and, at the same time, the technological advances, the materials available and the culture of society at the time each object was made.
In this sense, a set of were selected 10 works from the Frederic Marès Museum depending on its type and the period of realization, in order to study the evolution of this type of enamel over time .
The study includes the morphological study, the determination of the composition of the different enamels and the metal support and the comparison of the results with other Llemotges works.
It is a project of the analytical chemistry section of the University of Barcelona in collaboration with the Frederic Marès Museum and Dra. Lourdes of San Jose.
