TOY THEATERS. From entertainment to collecting. Catalonia, XIX-XX centuries
The exhibition makes it possible to retrace for the first time the history of paper theaters in Catalonia, a subject that was not well known until now. From Chinese shadows to lithographic theatres, with their brightly colored prosceniums, mouth curtains, backdrops, racks and characters, you can admire a representative selection of the main publishers of the 19th and 20th centuries: Paluzie, Seix i Barral, Camaleonte and a few others.
These cut-out and mountable theaters, born as children's entertainment, are today essentially objects of collectors. Frederic Marès, the founder of the museum, also collected some. For this reason, the exhibition is double, because while you can follow the story in the exhibition hall, you can also see the permanent collection in the Sala de les joguines, where seven dioramas by M. Engelbrecht, dating from around 1730-40, stand out, considered the forerunners of paper theaters and extremely rare pieces in international collections.
