Montserrat mother and earth
Montserrat mother and earth
Montserrat, mare i terra
On 29 November 2025, the exhibition Montserrat, Mother and Land opens to the public, curated by Sílvia Canalda, art historian and professor at the University of Barcelona (UB). Visitors can find it in Room 28 on the 1st Floor of the Museu Frederic Marès.
The exhibition explores the phenomenon of collecting in relation to devotion, and more specifically the image of the Virgin, the monastery, and the mountain of Montserrat, given that the Museu Frederic Marès has a room dedicated to this theme and this year marks the millennium of the Monastery.
The exhibition seeks to delve into devotional collecting through the Montserrat-related objects collected by Frederic Marès and others from institutions and private collections. The exhibition narrative emphasises the iconographic evolution of the image of the Virgin of Montserrat, the popular devotional objects linked to her worship, and their dissemination through the world of printmaking, highlighting the most exceptional works in the collection. Finally, as a closing section, it includes the impact that the Montserrat theme has had on contemporary creation.
A total of around forty works are on display, most of which belong to the Museum’s collection, while thirteen have been loaned by several museums and private collectors.
