Montjuïc's escalators to be replaced

Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM) has put work for replacing Montjuïc’s 22 escalators out to tender. The initiative will ensure more egalitarian accessibility all over the mountain, while helping to improve the management of people's journeys. The replacement of the escalators has a budget of €5 million, and work is scheduled to finish early in 2026.

The aim is to completely replace all 22 escalators on Montjuïc mountain, in accordance with sustainability, safety and resistance criteria. The search is on for a new model of escalator that promotes energy efficiency and savings. The improvements will include, among other things, the installation of a remote-control and monitoring system for optimising the maintenance and availability of the facilities.

The escalators will be replaced section by section, ensuring accessibility to the mountain at all times. That means the current escalators will operate alongside the new ones while the work is being carried out. Work is scheduled to begin at the start of 2025.

Currently, the system of television cameras is being renovated, in order to improve the detection of escalators that have stopped, so they can be restarted from the control centre. The most frequent stops are not caused by breakdowns, but by acts of vandalism, which stop the escalators by triggering their safety mechanisms. The installation of the new control system, via closed-circuit television, began last week. The cameras will be progressively replaced, by section, from 11 July to the middle of August, with the aim of reducing the overall negative effects on the escalator system.
