Barcelona en la Literatura Universal
We’re launching the new “Barcelona en la Literatura Universal” [Barcelona in World Literature] series with a title that takes a close look at the ties between Barcelona and Italian poetry, prose, publishing, cinema and theatre.
Barcelona has always looked to Italy, just as Italy has always looked to us with curiosity, desire and a thirst for adventure. Since the 19th century, our city has been home to an Italian community that is highly active in politics, industry and trade, as well as literature and the arts.
This book is the first to thoroughly explore the ties between Barcelona and Italian literature and culture. Amaranta Sbardella, a scholar of Italian and Catalan literature, delves into these fascinating connections with engaging prose and a touch of humour, connecting novels, poems, premieres and anecdotes, historical events and surprising encounters.
Italians make up the largest foreign community in Barcelona, and their literary and cultural contribution to the city has been extraordinary. Following meticulous research as in-depth as it is wide-ranging, Sbardella traces the footsteps of different Italian figures in the city, investigating their careers, works and influences and seeking insight into their impressions of Barcelona.
This book is an invitation to broaden the horizons of what we think about when we think about Barcelona’s literary heritage, and to discover and read new Italian-language authors.
