What would happen in the famous story of the Pied Piper if a little girl who’s deaf were added to the mix? El silenci d’Hamelín is a new take on the traditional tale, with the addition of a little girl who’s deaf. Indeed, her deafness highlights the silences that are hidden in this world of ours: a noisy, strident world that at the same time is full of unspoken desires, hidden facts, people who talk a lot but don't say actually anything, and people who hear, but don't listen.
Clara and Bruno saw how the rats invaded the town until an outsider appeared on the scene and put an end to the plague. Now grown up, they look back on what happened. Bruno speaks of how the music of the flute bewitched him, while Clara remembers seeing her brother turning towards the abyss. These are two different impressions of the same event, two ways of explaining it, with and without words.
El silenci d’Hamelín speaks of the positive side of being disadvantaged, of being ‘differently abled’. It’s also a statement in favour of non-verbal communication, expression through the body, and through sound. Farrés Brothers i cia work with junk, gestures, words and puppets to create an ironic show with no moralising. El silenci d’Hamelín won the FETEN prize for the best inclusive theatre show in 2018.
