I am moving to Barcelona
What do I need to do?

When you move to another city you have to complete various administrative formalities and we know that this can be a complex process. To help you comply with the necessary bureaucratic requirements, we have identified the most important or worthwhile formalities, which we detail in this section in a clear, practical way.

You should take into account the following:

  • You will have to complete some formalities before arriving.
  • The formalities are normally carried out in the local language and depend on various administrative bodies, so you will have to exercise a little patience.
  • The information focuses on the City of Barcelona. Although many formalities are standardised, we advise you to check the information if you move to another municipality.
  • Formalities change with some frequency and although we try to keep up to date, the only formality that is applicable is the one that is provided for in the current legislation at the time of carrying out the formality in question.
  • The information regarding immigration formalities (visas and authorisations) presented here is addressed to five specific groups: investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, highly qualified professionals and students. Two recent legal requirements focus on these groups, with the aim of attracting international talent to Spain: Law 14/2013, of 27 September, known as the “Entrepreneurs Act”, and Royal Decree 11/2018, Title III (transposition of European Directive 2016/801 into Spanish law). The formalities for foreign nationals established in these two regulations are those presented in this section.
